Private Lessons for Drums

These lessons are intended for anyone who wants to learn to play the drums, or anyone who already plays but wants to improve. Weekly drum lessons are available for ages 8 and up (adults encouraged as well!) in either a 30, 45, or 60 minute duration. All you need to get started is a practice pad and a pair of drumsticks.

The curriculum is drum set-focused and covers topics such as rhythm, meter, feel, drum notation, learning songs, time, and independence. The lessons are taught on acoustic drum sets in a tandem side-by-side configuration, which allows students a maximum of hands-on time behind the kit. Once enrolled we’ll put together a plan that will move you in the direction of the drummer you wish to become.

Private Lessons for Music Production

The Music Production Program is intended for anyone who wants to learn or improve upon their ability to record and mix music. Weekly lessons take place at my recording studio and the curriculum includes both a theoretical and practical hands-on approach. The program covers all aspects of music production with an in-depth focus on recording and mixing music.

The music production program can act as an on-par alternative to the more costly tuition-based audio production schools, or it can also act as a precursor or jumpstart prior to attending a tuition-based audio production program.

In addition to the prepared program, the course of study can be tailored as a hybrid approach (lessons & recording sessions) for those working towards the goal of releasing their own music. This option tends to be a good fit for singer/songwriters who want to work on their own music, while simultaneously learning the principles of music production. {occasional supplementary studio-time is recommended for the hybrid approach option}

Music Production lessons are available for ages 15 and up (adults encouraged as well!), and offered in 60 minute weekly time slots.

Are the lessons a good fit for kids?

The format works well for both kids and adults. The program is comprised of hands-on, interactive activities that keep students engaged and excited to learn. I strive to present musical concepts in a fun, positive, and relatable way for students of all ages.

My primary goal for younger students is that they have fun while also developing an early interest and appreciation for music. That said, stealthily tucked-away just beneath all that fun, the lessons have also been known to teach self-confidence, time management, focus, patience, perseverance, and a sense of accomplishment.

Why study here?

The Drum & Music Production programs feature a comprehensive path that will take you from fundamentals through to advanced techniques. The content is paced to fit your individual growth speed and arranged to meet your desired trajectory. The in-person format allows you the opportunity for real-time feedback, and the weekly scheduled lessons act to keep you focused, driven, excited, and engaged. The lessons are well-prepared and presented in a patient, adaptive, and collaborative manner. As an educator, I am deeply invested in helping you to break down the obstacles and connect the dots.

Location & Amenities

The studio is tucked away in Seattle’s (North) Fremont neighborhood with plenty of non-metered street parking.  We have a comfortable lounge that is perfect for waiting parents & siblings.

A Little Bit About Me

I found a pair of my dad’s old drum sticks when I was 12, and not long after Santa rolled through with an actual drum kit I had somehow just seen in the 1987 Sears winter catalog.  A few years later, I accepted a Jazz / Drum-set performance scholarship to the University of South Florida, and eventually moved on to Florida State University where I earned a degree in Anthropology with a secondary focus in Ethnomusicology.  The day after I graduated, I loaded up my car with a bag of clothes, my drum kit, and headed northwest for Seattle. Although drumming was still my primary interest, I had begun to grow more enamored with music production. I bought a 4-track cassette recorder and put a million hours on it, stacking synths, layering guitars, flipping and reversing.  I went on to graduate from the Art Institute of Seattle, and accepted a job as the house engineer at Seattle’s London Bridge Studio.  While there, I had the opportunity to work with and learn from many talented & accomplished record producers, musicians, and engineers. I was able to play a small role on some expensive records, and since moving on, able to play a much larger role on many more local releases. These days, I spend my time parenting a rambunctious 7 year old, helping bands make records, and teaching private music production and drum lessons.

Policies Below

Payments:

Drum and Music Production lessons are based on a month-to-month commitment. Payment for the full month of lessons is due on the first day of the month. The number of lessons billed is based on the number of lessons for your given day in the next month (if your lesson day is Tuesday and there are four Tuesdays in a month, you will be billed for four lessons; if there are five Tuesdays in the month, you will be billed for five). Payments exclude holiday closings, meaning you will never be billed for holidays on which the studio is closed (Please see below for our observed holidays). All registered students are required to enroll in our secure auto-bill system. This is a safe and convenient way to pay for your ongoing lessons. Our system will automatically bill your card on the first day of every month. We accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express.

Rescheduling & Makeup Lessons:

If a lesson is canceled by a student with less than 24 hours notice, no refunds or make-up credits will be offered. Make-up lesson credits (not refunds) are offered to each student 4 times annually (once per season) for lessons that were canceled with more than 24 hours notice. There is a 4 week limit on rescheduled lessons and after the 4 week period the lesson is forfeited with no makeup due.

Instructor Absence:

Lessons canceled by the instructor will be rescheduled at a mutual agreeable time or a full credit of the canceled lesson will be issued towards your next month’s lesson charges.

Refunds:

Refunds are not offered for any lessons cancelled by a student.

Holidays & Closures:

We are closed for Independence Day (July 2nd-5th) and Thanksgiving week (Nov 25-29th, 2025), as well as Winter Break (December 23rd through January 3rd). We also observe the Seattle Public Schools Mid-Winter Break (Feb 17-21,2025) & Spring Break (April 14-18th, 2025). We reserve the right to announce additional closures as need be throughout the year. You will never be billed for days in which the studio is closed.

Summer Lessons:

We do continue weekly lessons throughout the summer. If you are taking the summer off, we require a minimum of 2 weeks written notice to withdraw from lessons (see our withdrawal/termination policy below). We offer a “Summer Break” which guarantees your time slot will be held until you resume lessons for 50% of the regular cost. Students can use the Summer Break option for just one month of the summer or up to all three.

Punctuality:

Student lessons are scheduled back to back, thus it’s of the utmost importance that we stay on track with all of our start and end times throughout the day. If a student arrives tardy, our time together must unfortunately still end as previously scheduled. Thank you for understanding.

Discontinuing Lessons:

We require a minimum of 2 weeks written notice (received by the 15th) in order to discontinue lessons for the following month. Once the new billing cycle has occurred on the 1st of the month, refunds will not be offered.

Please feel free to email us with any questions. Thank you!
